An Interview with Antony Kelsey

This article is for informational purposes only – please read our Terms and Conditions.

Antony Kelsey, managing director of Capital International (Jersey) Ltd, introduces himself and explains why he was so keen to bring the Isle of Man business to Jersey

Published in Jersey Evening Post: https://jerseyeveningpost.com/business/2025/05/28/we-want-to-be-the-partner-of-choice-for-discerning-clients/

What is your background?

Perhaps unexpectedly, I studied languages at Durham University before joining the European team of a financial services research and consultancy house in London.

This facilitated a move to work in the finance sector in the Isle of Man in 2001 when I was looking to settle down and start a family.

My use of European languages is now limited to holidays, as I moved my focus to professional qualifications, achieving chartered fellow status from the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and, more recently, chartered director status from the Institute of Directors.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

A definite highlight has been leading the acquisition in Jersey of what was Martello Asset Management, now named Capital International (Jersey) Ltd.

Prior to this, I was delighted to be part of the project team that conceived the plan for a brand-new digital bank focused on corporate banking for trust and fiduciary providers.

Being part of the team that successfully launched the first new bank in the Isle of Man in over 20 years, which is already operating profitably, is an achievement I am definitely very proud of.

Why did you decide to bring Capital to Jersey?

Firstly, Jersey is a centre of excellence for private wealth and is a much larger market than our home jurisdiction, the Isle of Man. Secondly, we wanted to expand our footprint outside the Isle of Man and to create more critical mass and a larger asset management business.

We have an increasingly international client base and many of them use Jersey for structuring. Having an asset management business in this jurisdiction helps our interface with the local fiduciary and corporate service provider market.

What are the immediate priorities for the newly acquired business?

The immediate priority is the integration of the Jersey business into the wider Capital International family, so that new and existing clients can benefit from our combined investment expertise, outstanding online portal and tailored personal service. It is also important that we enhance the visibility of the Capital International brand within Jersey to deepen the existing links into the local community.

What’s the most important aspect of blending company cultures?

I think the single most important factor is communication. Combining businesses and navigating change is never plain sailing, so ensuring that communication lines are clear and open goes a long way to aid this challenging process.

It is a great help that the individuals who work for us in both locations are totally excited about combining the teams and completely up for embracing the challenge. It is also important to understand the heritage and values of each business and to focus on the common ground, and our aim is to incorporate the best parts of both businesses to blend a stronger, combined culture.

What does good leadership look like to you?

For me, clarity of direction is key. However, leaders also need to be adaptable and excel at problem-solving. That means empowering the team around me as well as leading by example. And that needs a culture of support, recognition and empathy.

These are all qualities I try to bring to my role as managing director in Jersey, and I try to apply the skill set that I have developed at Capital International in the Isle of Man to the Capital International business in Jersey.

What is your vision for Jersey?

To be the trusted partner of choice for discerning institutional and professional clients, delivering tailored asset management solutions with integrity, innovation, and outstanding client service and engagement from the heart of the Jersey financial sector.

Our business will flourish through an independent client-centric approach that delivers sustainable growth for our clients, our business, and the Jersey community.
